Research
Dr. Dusenbury is a nationally recognized researcher in drug abuse prevention.
Since 2000 she has been a Senior Researcher at Tanglewood Research in North
Carolina. She has directed school and community-based drug abuse prevention
research projects in more than 200 schools, written extensively on adolescent
drug abuse and prevention, and served on numerous state and federal review
panels. The goal of her research is to promote the successful dissemination of
research-based approaches to prevention and promote positive youth development
through social and emotional learning. She directs several federally funded
projects to prepare educators and leaders to help young people achieve their
full potential.
Education and Academic Experience
Dr. Dusenbury completed her undergraduate and graduate education at the
University of Vermont, receiving an M.A. in Developmental Psychology (1982) and
a Ph.D. in Social Psychology (1984). Dr. Dusenbury served on the faculty at
Weill Medical College of Cornell University from 1985 to 1994.
Honors
Dr. Dusenbury was the recipient of the Vermont Conference on Primary Prevention
of Psychopathology Award (1980), and the recipient of a National Institute of
Mental Health Clinical Scientist Postdoctoral Training Award (1984-1985) at
Indiana University.
Guides to Prevention
Dr. Dusenbury was the primary researcher involved in developing Drug
Strategies' two consumers guides to prevention: Making the Grade: A Guide to
School Drug Prevention Programs (1996, 1999), and Safe Schools, Safe
Students: A Guide to Violence Prevention Strategies (1998). She
collaborated with the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional
Learning (CASEL) on the development of Safe and Sound: An Educational Leader’s
Guide to Social and Emotional Learning (2003). She consulted with the
University of Arizona College of Education to develop Protective Schools:
Linking Drug Abuse Prevention with Student Success (2000), and with the
University of Washington Social Development Research Group to develop Communities
That Care® Prevention Strategies Guide (1999).
